Names and Numbers

Base Map from  https//d-map.com/carte.php?num_car=2321&lang=e

The main sources of information are:

              prisoner of war lists compiled by the International Red Cross (IRC) and published  in August 1943. Copies are held in

              The  National Archives, London

              Escape Reports,   National Archives London

              information released by the Italian War Ministry throughout the period 1941-3 availlable on http://campifascisti.it

A major problem encountered when trying to identify a camp is that although the numbers are consistent in both main sources  the names are not, as can be seen from the chart below:

* converted to internment camp

** transferred to

San Giuseppe Iato

The classic example of confusion is provided by the names of two camps in the area of Sforzacsosta, near Macerata.

One camp, no. 56, was closed after flooding in September 1942.  In Italian sources it is known as Sforzacosta.

Nearby was a large camp, no. 53, which the Italian War Ministry named Urbisaglia, after the railway station nearby, Urbisaglia-Macerata.  Some of the internees called this camp Sforzacosta, as did the International Red Cross, though the Red Cross  also added the name Macerata.  All the Escape Reports of the men who made it  to Switzerland refer to the camp as Macerata, as did many soldiers taken from there to Germany in their Liberation Reports. The Escape Reports of the men who made it to Allied Lines use the name Sforzacosta. However, they escaped from Camp 53 and not camp 56.

Other than in Italian documents,  Camp 52 is never  referred to as Pian di Coreglia,  the name Chiavari (or its misspelling Chiabari) being preferred, even though Chiavari is 14km away.

Furthermore, Camp 54, situated at 2km from the town of Passo Corese, is only referred to  by that name  in Italian documents.  the name Fara in Sabina (or Fara Sabina) is universally used.  The railway station of Fara Sabina is ini the town of Passo Corese.

Work Camps

Based on the work of the late Brian Sims who compiled the list from the escape and evasion reports held in The National Archives WO 208
